Yaël Ossowski, Deputy Director at the Consumer Choice Center, discusses climate litigation, consumer rights, and energy pricing in the latest episode of the Powering America Podcast. The conversation highlights the impact of climate lawsuits on consumers and the ongoing legislative efforts to address these issues.
WASHINGTON — June 23, 2026 — In a recent episode of the Powering America Podcast, Yaël Ossowski from the Consumer Choice Center examined the implications of climate litigation on consumers and energy pricing. The discussion also covered the Stop Climate Shakedowns Act of 2026, which aims to address the proliferation of lawsuits against energy companies.
Ossowski emphasized that climate litigation is not just a legal issue but a consumer rights issue. He noted that these lawsuits often lead to increased energy prices, stating, "We actually have research that tacks on every time that you have one of these lawsuits exactly what that bill will mean for you as a consumer when you fill up." He explained that the costs associated with legal battles are ultimately passed on to consumers, making energy more expensive.
The Stop Climate Shakedowns Act of 2026 seeks to nullify state-level lawsuits against energy companies, moving such cases to federal court. Ossowski described the bill as "actually a good bill, and we don't often have that... it would take all of these state lawsuits and essentially render them null." This legislation aims to protect consumers from the financial burden of frivolous lawsuits while still allowing legitimate claims against energy companies.
The Consumer Choice Center is a global organization focused on advocating for consumer rights and promoting free-market solutions. It aims to represent consumers who prefer fewer government regulations and more choices in their lives.
